Three benefits of hiring an interior designer

"When it's your own property it's sometimes difficult to see the wood for the trees."

It’s not surprising that most people don’t consider hiring an interior designer. After all, how can someone else know your tastes better than you? On the other hand…

• They are able to understand, assess and deal with any design problems:
An interior designer is trained to listen to how a client would like to use a space and assess the best way to achieve this. The first step in any design process is getting to grips with the issues the design should tackle. This could be making sure different zones in a room have the correct lighting for ambience and tasks. Or it could be about making sure a small space is used in a clever way.

• They are an outsider:
An interior designer is able to take a step back and look at the bigger picture, as well as dealing with the details. When it’s your own property it’s sometimes difficult to see the wood for the trees and assess a situation in a dispassionate way. Believe me, I’m trying to remodel my own house at the moment and it’s proving to be an almost impossible task!

• They can save you money:
There are three ways an interior designer will estimate the cost of your project.
1. They charge a design fee;
2. They received a trade rate on goods and make a return by charging a retail price;
3. A mixture of the two.

The charges should be transparent, and very often an interior designer should be able to save you money. They have greater access to resources, making sure you get the design you want, without the hassle and cost of trying to achieve the same look yourself.

If you’d like to find out whether working with an interior designer could benefit you, please drop me a line. At Home by Design is a small, personalised service, without the large overheads of a big design studio.
